OK well, just reflecting on the recording process here. Working on a solo acoustic album... I'm engineering it myself which makes me a bit schizophonic. Never done it like this before. I'm emphasizing the capture of sweet live recorded takes, getting good tones, keeping the magic of performance without getting too nerded/wigged out by the computOR and learning ProTools concurrently. This is challenging.
A true surprise is that twice since I've started this project I've finished a track which has led me to start writing a new song, taking it all the way to completion - wow! Kinda wreaking havok on the production schedule but adding an unexpected creative element that is very edgy and exciting.
Looks like this record is gonna have two tunes that came out of nowhere during the sessions unannounced... bonus.

"A weekend of performances has been donated by some of Portland's most
popular bands and Laurelthirst mainstays to help raise money for a new
and better PA sound system.
The Laurelthirst is a one-of-a-kind establishment and is arguably
Portland's Art & Music Lover's Public House. It is a special place
that's easy to talk about, yet hard to explain where some of the best
music you'll ever hear happens for free - no cover charge every week,
all year 'round.
A diverse culture is represented by those who perform and are regular
(and not so regular) patrons of this establishment as it is has become
a community family room, bar and concert stage. This history reaches
back almost 20 years. Passion lives, breathes, plays and drinks here
among the publicans and thrives with its nurturing.
For this we musical artists have been thinking about the fact that
with the calibre of audiences we get to play for and the high musical
experiences we regularly achieve, we all would benefit immensely from
more sonic fidelity in the now "non-smoking" music room at "The
'Thirst".
With that we have proposed to help management not only replace the
existing system but bump it up to a greater aesthetic standard and
treat everyone's ears to the potential level of musical
peak-experience that higher-fidelity delivers. What happens onstage in
the Laurelthirst music room feels worthy. We want to make things sound
better, that's all.
Margins are tight in this business and when faced with the potential
of making greater art for art's sake The Laurelthirst Public House
crowd, musicians and management see this as an opportunity where
everyone wins and we just get the job done by "pulling together what
we can as a community."

It's a good time to focus on completing some new recordings. Strings For Industry has been putting together an album which should be released sometime first half of this year. Piano Throwers are culling some live material for a release and I have begun tracking for a new Scott Law project as well.
The new Scott Law CD will focus on songs and instrumentals that I've come up with and can present in an elemental format. I'm going for "big air" here, with lots of room and a spare but substantial tonal signature and vibe. What's also compelling for me is that I'm not only producing (with valued input from family and respected cohorts) but engineering the tracking session as well... this is new, unfamiliar and exciting territory. I'll be keeping a blog about this as it unfolds so - stay tuned.

I just returned from my first European tour with Honkytonk Homeslice! My circadian rhythm is a bit turned around at the moment but that gives way to more odd waking hours savoring what turned out to be an exquisite experience. We had very successful shows, met lots of great people and felt very appreciated by our brand new audiences over there. I want to personally thank the home team of crazy Americans who joined us in Amsterdam, Apothecary Travel, Dave Swift and our agent Michael Cole who was a fabulous host to us throughout our journey!

The past few weeks have been spent in the mountains of Colorado diligently working on the upcoming Honkytonk Homeslice album release for SCI Fidelity records. Billy, Jilian and I had a really fun time capturing performances of our music with the help of ace LA-based production engineer, Jim Watts. His expertise and creative recording techniques allowed us to be very comfortable in the studio environment, much as we are at live shows. I think that will come through when you hear it!
We also got huge support from our families and friends in making this recording possible. Big love and thanks to them for that!

Hey ya'll, I just returned from a great Rocky
Mountains tour with Honkytonk Homeslice and Railroad Earth. Bright
spots included wonderful "Joint" sets each night with all members of
both bands playing each other's material together. I got to play "Owl"
every night which was alot of fun for me, weaving clean electric guitar
lines through the deep, swampy bluegrassy drive of RRE. Billy played
acoustic and spanked some slide booty on his lap steel while Jilian's
strong and sweet voice soared soulfully in the mix. The nine piece
third-set powerhouse was awesome. A sold-out Saturday night Denver show
(800+) made us really feel the love.More Recordings: I'll be in the studio with Seattle singer-songwriter Jim Page at the end of February and then in Colorado recording a Honkytonk Homeslice studio album in March. Look for those later this year... More SLB coming soon - stay in touch!

It was truly fine to play a part in the “Comes a Time” Rex Benefit/Jerry Garcia Tribute at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. The warm, last rays of summer blazing a golden light upon the bowl full of bouncing people singing along with us is a very sweet memory, as were those memories that we celebrated that day. It seemed perfect. All the friends I saw and the music that I heard gave me a bit of that ol' Grateful Dead feeling from my own back pages. With nostalgia for the past, we were also right there and present, doing our thing as we know how and having a time of it. That's a good place in the world to be and with Billy, Kang, Keith and Jason, I felt right at home... definitely honored to have been there on that stage. Listen to Scott play 'Casey Jones' with members of String Cheese Incident

So here's a twist of fate... On July 5th I returned from dinner to find a message on the answer machine from Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Skip ahead to Saturday, July 16th where I find myself for the first time at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado playing Jerry Garcia's Doug Irwin guitar ("Wolf" - named for the inlay behind the bridge). It was a pre-sound check gathering with Phil Lesh and Friends for the Unbroken Chain Foundation to help raise money for the many good causes they support. I was picked by Phil along with one other performer for the Wolf Scholarship given to deserving musicians of Phil's choosing. Other people bid at auction for this unique chance.Oddly, or not; I had actually just finished reading Lesh's new book the morning it was announced that Garcia's instrument had been put on loan to UBC. They were to open bidding for this event and also present the scholarship opportunity after reviewing the first wave of submissions. Historically I've not been much of a contest enterer but for some reason I was compelled and overnighted a pre-copy of my new disc and a personal letter to Phil. Out of 65 entries reviewed, two were chosen by him and I got to be one of them! Wow... that makes me feel really good - and it was damned fun! Playing with Phil was incredible. We did Eyes of the World and Black Peter together. Jerry's guitar was like a dream... I hope we get to do it again sometime. Listen to Scott play 'Black Peter' with Phil & Friends! |
